After decades of perseverance, the City of Colorado Springs successfully purchased Manitou Section 16 and placed a conservation easement on it which will be held by Palmer Land Trust. Thanks to your support, Palmer Land Trust was able to cover the costs of the conservation easement, therefore ensuring this iconic recreation and open space property will be protected for you, forever. The purchase and protection of this property add to Red Rock Canyon, White Acres, and Bear Creek Regional Park to create a 2,192-acre swath of City and County-owned open space on the west side of Colorado Springs. Over 150,000 people visit Section 16 each year. The purchase and protection of Section 16 ensures that visitors may continue to do so for generations.
Section 16 is just one of nearly twenty properties Palmer Land Trust is working to protect through its Protect Pikes Peak Conservation Initiative. Palmer is working with individuals and communities throughout the region to permanently protect public open spaces, historic farms and ranches, critical habitat, and stunning scenic vistas. Since 1977, Palmer Land Trust has protected 70,000 acres of these cherished lands across the Pikes Peak region and western Lower Arkansas Valley, making it one of the most successful local land trusts in the United States today.
