Palmer Land Trust’s first conservation easement is now El Paso County’s newest and largest public open space park. Palmer facilitated the donation of 1,040 protected acres on the Pineries Ranch, in the Black Forest near Palmer Lake – for preservation and use as a public open space and natural area. The protected area contains old growth stands of Ponderosa Pine (now nearly non-existent along the Colorado/Wyoming Front Range corridor), relict prairie grasslands, the headwaters of Black Squirrel Creek, seasonal wetlands, and habitat for elk and other species. The transfer of the property to El Paso County occurred in early September. The property will be open to the public following the development and implementation of a park master plan, which is being funded by Great Outdoors Colorado.
