Become a Volunteer Land Steward
The Palmer Land Trust relies on a group of trained, volunteer land stewards to schedule and conduct our annual monitoring assessments of easement properties. Formal, classroom training (4 - 8 hours) is provided annually in the Spring. In addition, there will be 'field' training and staff support as you make property visits (typically in the summer). More information is provided below and in our Volunteer Land Steward Position Description. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer land steward, please call Carolyn McCallister (632-3236) or send an e-mail to stewardship@palmerlandtrust.org.
Why we monitor the land on which we hold conservation easements?
As a Land Trust which has adopted the Standards and Practices of the Land Trust Alliance, we are required to perform perpetual and regular (at least annual) monitoring of our easements (approximately 90 protected properties in Southeastern Colorado) and the property we own (currently three properties in Colorado Springs). The goals of the monitoring visits include:
- Preserving the conservation values of the land for which the conservation easement was put in place.
- Documenting conditions of the land and any changes from previous visits.
- Creating a history of the property's condition and uses and the management efforts undertaken.
- Providing an opportunity for regular contact with the landowner.
- Establishing a record that could be used in the event of legal action.
- Upholding the public trust in our organization.
Key Responsibilities of Land Stewards:
- Training
- Review of materials from the establishment of the conservation easement as well as previous stewardship reports
- Contacting the landowner and scheduling the monitoring visit
- Conducting the monitoring visit
- Completing the monitoring report
- Submitting any additional documentation or record of visit
